American novelist Jennifer Egan on what it takes to write fiction that stands out. No pressure then! Well, she has just won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, two of the biggest literary prizes in the States.

The quote comes from a recent interview on Open Book, BBC Radio 4, where she talks about the writing of her book, A Visit From The Goon Squad. You may still be able to listen to that interview for a while longer, here.

The Pulitzer citation described the book as:

an inventive investigation of growing up and growing old in the digital age, displaying a big-hearted curiosity about cultural change at warp speed.
