I came late to Tim Winton, but I’m catching up. Minimum of Two, his second collection of short stories, was first published in 1987 but hasn’t dated. This 2009 edition has been in my bag over the last month. I’ve hardly noticed my journeys round London on Underground and bus. One of these stories can be read in the time it takes to get from Highgate to Leicester Square. Perfect.
Winton is a master of the minimal - whole lives revealed in a glance, a glimpse, a moment forensically examined. His prose is down-to-earth and sublime poetry.
Anyone aspiring to write short, powerful stories, read this, it’s a master-class. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
